New type work: figaro figaro

Nick Keppol

I have been listening to allot of MF Doom recently and was inspired. This is a new type design I just finished. The lyrics are from the Madvillain song Figaro.

From start to completion, this radically transformed into a whole new style of unexpected lettering. It was originally going to be rooted in calligraphy/graffiti style. After over 25 sketches and 5 different vector translations I realized I was heading in the wrong direction. I re evaluated and realized that the layouts that were coming out of the writing called for a more simple and vertical style. I developed a strict grid, with the counters and strokes being of the same weight, moving away from the fluid letter forms I have been experimenting with recently. Once the structure was there, it pretty much designed itself. It was a challenge to put imagery with this typography because of its tight and vertical form. I eventually decided to just play off the grid using audio cables to compliemnt the design, and make the letters pop, bringing them to the foreground.
