Frame That Spam! Data-Crunching Artists Transform the World of Information

March 5th, 2008 by nick

Alex Dragulescu
Title: Spam Architecture
Software: Maya, Mel, PHP
Website: www.sq.ru

Dragulescu presses the spam he receives into service as a blueprint for digital sculptures. First a script breaks the message into chunks of text he calls tokens. Each token is assigned a value (based on the sum of its characters), which triggers different modeling operations-adding elements to the structure, shifting pieces around, and blowing the thing apart. “I am very much like artists who appropriate manufactured or existing objects,” Dragulescu says. “Spam is found, discarded, abject data that can be mutated, recycled, and transformed.”

Title: I Want You To Want Me
Software: Java, Python, OpenFrameworks, C++, OpenGL

This Web installation monitors and reflects people’s profiles on internet dating sites. Each balloon represents a single dating profile - the lighter the balloon, the younger the person. Designed for a large touch-sensitive screen installation, each balloon opens up with some text from an individual profile when tapped. Dating site profiles are “modern messages in a bottle, short statements of self, launched into the ether,” Harris says. “I Want You to Want Me is an exploration of the search for self and the search for new relationships.”
