Remembering Lou Dorfsman

Lou Dorfsman, Creative Director for all things CBS for over 40 years died Wednesday in Roslyn NY at the age of 90 due to congestive heart failure. Dorfman has been in the design news a lot recently for the ongoing restoration project of his famous Gastrotypographicalassemblage wall which once lived in the CBS cafeteria. The Center for Design Study has assumed responsibility for the Wall’s preservation, including its restoration, maintenance and exhibition. More about Dorfsman can be found here & here

“He was the kingpin of the New York School of Design, a pluperfect, fearless, uncompromising perfectionist, and a father of corporate image in the world,”

Gastrotypographicalassemblage - CBS Wall Restoration

cafeteria, cbs, design, dimensional letters, Dorfman, Gastrotypographicalassemblage, graphic design, Herb Lubalin, Lubalin, Avant Garde, Typography

I stumbled upon this wall about two years ago while doing research on Herb Lubalin’s work. I was very happy to see this was being restored by The Center for Design Study in Atlanta.

The Center for Design Study, having acquired the wall, is engaged in fundraising to support the meticulous and extensive restoration required. The goal is to see Dorfman’s wall restored to its full integrity and as part of a permanent traveling exhibition on historical American design, to serve as a tool for education and expanding awareness of the value of intelligently applied design. The wall is a window to the past that should be built up, not torn down.
